Moveable Alphabet
This is an activity based on the montessori method that I have used with my kids for years, before knowing that I was using a montessori method. -Pirra
What you need:
enough cardboard to make 156 small squares
markers, felt, or sandpaper
Making the Moveable Alphabet:
Cut the squares.
On each square write a letter of the alphabet. (6 of each letter) You can also make the letters using felt or sandpaper. This way they can trace the letters and learn how to form the letter. (Kids learn a lot through touch)
How to use it:
Cut out pictures from old magazines and pamphlets and stick them onto paper. Then using the MA (moveable alphabet) have the children “sound” out the word. They can pick the letters they think are correct and then spell out the word.
Play bingo with a friend. Place a picture of an object or an object in the centre of the table and roll a dice. You must roll a six before you can select a letter from the MA. The first to select all the letters and spell the name of the object correctly wins.
For smaller children make cards with pictures. Then write the word underneath. The child can then copy the word and sound out the sounds as they go. Starting with small words like cat, dog and hat.
