This week I’m teaching a lesson on nutrition to 2 first graders and a preschooler. It will go something like this:

Introduction to the new food pyramid:

On a big piece of paper we’ll draw the pyramid, label the sections and come up with examples of foods from each category.

Discussion on how some foods and meals overlap categories:

Look at labels of prepared food to find the components in different categories.

Books:

Make “food people” (note this activity is from the Brownie Girl Scout Try-It Handbook):

Cut out pictures of food from grocery store ads and paste them together to make a picture of a person. You are what you eat.

Shopping Lists:

Write out some of their favorite foods from each category on a printout.

Healthy Snacks:

We’ll make 3 different apple-based snacks from the Kraft Foods website.

Take home:

Various other printouts and activities from the Nurtrition Exploration website. (note: you have to register as a homeschool teacher with them to access all their information, but it is free and you can do it on line.)
