Public School at Home is so.. Public School
We quit TXVA. You had to time every class and spend at least 6 hours a day on school work. Why is that an issue?
My son is really bright, but has ADHD. He can learn fast, but school work gets tedious fast. Homeschooling revolves around what works for the kid. Public school revolves around what a bunch of people who have never met my child think would be best for everyone. We need school to challenge him and help him improve his attention span while not driving him bonkers. It’s a balance.
I got the feeling that the school wanted us to lie about the time we were spending. No one said it. I’m not sure they were even thinking it loudly, but it seemed to be the only option. Imagine your kid is really good one day and finishes all of their work early. Do you reward them by making them do tomorrow’s work? Then tomorrow, they have to work for just as long in spite of being ahead. They could finish their grade early, but you still have to continue working for six hours a day every school day.
We’re trying out Time 4 Learning now. It’s $20 a month to access the CompassLearning system that schools use. T4L repackaged it. I figure it will keep Noah in line with public school kids in the major subject areas. I’ll post more about it when I learn more.
In the mean time, if you are homeschooling for secular reasons (though you may be a religious person) Homeschool-Talk is a good place to go for support. It’s not based around any particular type of curriculum or method.
